Scientists have made some great discoveries about how to prevent heart disease and get lower blood pressure with nitric oxide. In fact, this invisible gas may be the hidden substance that links lifestyle changes and other methods to reduce blood pressure.
It turns out that most of these methods, including even drugs, work by producing nitric oxide in the body. It’s nitric oxide that regulates blood pressure by expanding and contracting blood vessels. High levels of the gas dilate blood vessels and lower blood pressure while low levels constrict blood vessels and lead to hypertension.
A good diet, exercise and deep breathing all help to generate nitric oxide. Some drugs also produce it. Breathing slowly and deeply produces the same amount of nitric oxide as strenuous exercise.
