When You Don’t Want to Medicate Your Dog

Sometimes you want to avoid medicating your dog if possible especially when caring for elderly dogs. There are some easy home remedies you can safely use. If a solution you hear does not sound safe it is better to consult a vet first. The following can all be used safely on your dog.

Ticks or fleas Make a paste of orange rinds and apply it evenly on the fur of the dog. Let it remain there for five hours and then wash it gently. This is one easy and safe home remedy for helping your dogs get rid of ticks and fleas.

Dry, cracked paws Take Vaseline or petroleum jelly and apply it to the paws for four to five days. You will find the expected improvement and the paw will heal.

Odor problem Add a few drops of vinegar in the dog’s bath water. If you have trouble getting your dog in the bath, using baking soda as a dry shampoo will work. Sprinkle it on your dog’s coat and leave set for a few minutes and then brush out.

Insects and bites Insect stings and bites are another common problem with dogs. As soon as you notice this, put adequate solution of baking soda and water on the stung area. Apply ice for any swelling. If you notice any difficulty breathing after a sting, however, take your dog to the vet immediately as he may be allergic to the sting. A word of caution is in order here. Never give your dog anything involving onions or garlic, as these are toxic to a dog. If your dog is experiencing vomiting, diarrhea or seems to be in pain, do not try any home remedies. Call your vet immediately. It is better to be safe than to lose your beloved friend.

Spiked dog collar- “An accessory that gives an unusual look”

There was a fancy dress competition organized in our complex during the Christmas for children. It was a delight to see the children of different age groups come in different types of dresses. Out of the children between the age of 12 -18 the boy who caught the judges attention was wearing a leather band on his hand which had spikes. His hair had jelly so it was standing up like the sun rays. He was wearing a sleeveless leather jacket with jeans. On his neck he had a Spiked Dog Collar. He got the 1st prize for dressing up like a cool punk guy.

Understanding dogs

A friend of mine, Norman, has his first dog and called me in a panic the other day. He told me that he was convinced that his Labrador dog, Sandy, seemed to be having major problems with his prostrate. When I asked him how he had reached such a conclusion, he explained he had taken Sandy for a walk on his lead so they could get some exercise. He was stunned that Sandy seemed to be stopping at every corner, lifting his leg and doing a very short pee. Being a smarter that average person, Norman, immediately recognized this is being the first signs of a prostrate gland problem. Boy was he relieved when I explained to him that dogs use this tried and trusted method to mark and navigate their home territories.

Hard Pan Growth

Once a week I get my two gallons of compost tea and bring it home to my garden. Compost tea is a nutrient rich brown liquid that is a product of DIY worm composting. I spray it on all my garden areas including my rose bushes and crepe myrtle. Our soil here is a hard pan clay that until I started using compost tea did not support life at all. There are places here that thistles will not grow. With the help of a little worm compost and compost tea I now have a vigorous and thriving garden where once was hard pan.

Should I Be Concerned About the Height of Decorative Birdhouses?

Yes.  Each bird species has some idea of the optimal height for nest building.  Aside for concern about predators, parent birds must also consider what will happen if the babies fall out of the nest.  Therefore, decorative birdhouses that are too high or too low will prevent song birds from retrieving their young in the case of emergency.  For the most part, song birds will choose birdhouses that most closely match the height at which they would build their nests.
