If I were to take a look at the bible study tools which you own and use in your house, I could probably determine with reasonable accuracy what many of your doctrinal and theological beliefs might be. For example, if I were to find a copy of the new Oxford annotated Bible or the new interpreters Bible commentary on your shelves, then I would probably be correct in assuming that you are not an evangelical Protestant. On the other hand, if I were to find on your shelves a copy of the Douay-Rheims translation of the Bible, a copy of the Latin Vulgate, and the Jerome Bible commentary then I would say that your background and theological beliefs are Catholic.

Bible commentary recommendations: get one that will “stretch” you
December 8th, 2007 — Self-Improvement :: Spirituality
one of the most important Bible commentary recommendations I could give you would be the following — don't make the mistake that so many hands in purchasing a Bible commentary that is familiar and easy to use. Instead what you want to do is purchase one that is a bit beyond your present abilities. In other words, purchase a Bible commentary that you can grow into — one that will be a bit of a challenge for you to use, one that will "stretch" you, both intellectually and spiritually.
