If you are doing the wiring of your home yourself, it is not quite a bad idea - you will be saving mightily on the costs. You will have to get several residential wiring products yourself. At a basic glance, you will need cables (Cat 5 are good enough for home use), RJ45 plugs and sockets, patch panels, wall plates and an Ethernet hub. This is the equipment you will need to fix up. In addition, you will need tools such as krone tool, a crimping tool and a tester. And yes, do not forget to get a good manual to teach you how to go about the wiring, or download one of those from the Internet.
